From a vision in space, we find ourselves walking through the bush- where we stumble upon a hive of bees. They reminds us of the inevitability of unity and chaos- many little fragments with different melodies and ideas, all moving as one, through harmony and cacophony.

“Honey, honey, from the bees,
Honey, honey, love me please…”

What are we here to do?
As bees live to make honey, do we live to be loved?

Thalia, commonly known as the muse of comedy, is originally the muse of pastoral poetry, geometry, architecture, science and agriculture. She is said to wear a garland of flowers as a crown, instead of a laurel wreath like her sisters.The influence and symbolism of bees is deeply engrained in all her practices- designs of ancient temples were based on their hives, the shapes bees make in movement and organisation formed our early understandings of geometry, and their role in agriculture is unparalleled.

One Ancient Greek myth speaks of a man who sacrificed one of his master’s goats to the Muses. As punishment, his master locked him in a small box and left it in a field for him to die. The Muses were flattered by the man’s gesture and so they sent bees, known as the ‘Birds of the Muses’, to bring the man honey to nourish him. Three months later the master opened the box to find his servant alive and well- he took it as a sign from the gods and spared the man’s life.
